Farms sell all the time

Are you at that stage of life where looking ahead to another lambing or calving doesn’t have the same sense of satisfaction as it used to?

Maybe it’s time for a change – which can be daunting if like some of our Vendors we have helped to sell this past year you have been on the same farm for 40 or 50 years.

The good news is that farms do sell all the time.

We have analysed data for Manawatu-Whanganui farm sales in the period April 2021 to March 2022 as shown in the graph below.

Two main messages we take from this data:

  1. There is typically much greater activity in the Spring – you probably would have guessed that. To be ready to sell in the Spring, the planning process should be starting now through to August. For example, get all your key advisers on board (real estate agent, bank, accountant, consultant, lawyer); and don’t forget to involve any employees
  2. Autumn and Winter make up 36% of sales – with less farms on the market in the Winter, yours can really stand out.

The best time to sell

We advise the best time to sell is when you and the family are ready. Sometimes that’s a 1-2 year “lead-out” period. We have wide experience assisting clients in making such big decisions like this and believe this should never be rushed.

If that’s something you want to start to explore then please give Robert or Richard a call for further advice.
